Marysville, Ohio

56 Acres | April 29, 2004
HSWLT
Owned in Title

The Marysville Wildlife Sanctuary was established in 1998 through the donation of a conservation easement to the Humane Society Wildlife Land Trust.  As with all properties protected by the Wildlife Land Trust, there will be no further development, no destructive logging practices and all recreational and commercial hunting and trapping will forever be prohibited.

Located in central Ohio, just 25 miles northwest of Columbus, Marysville is the county seat for Union County. The donors felt the pressures of development as the area grew more urban, pressures that have continued to decrease open space in the region.

The Marysville Wildlife Sanctuary stands alone as 56 acres of deciduous forest, full of oaks and hickories, with dense stands of hawthorns.  Wild flowers and other native plants grace the open areas.  A small brook traverses the property, providing year-round water to its wildlife residents and migrating visitors.

White-tailed deer, foxes and badgers shared the sanctuary’s resources with raccoons, opossum, skunks and woodchucks.  The sounds of great horned owls fill the night.  Song birds serenade each other all day.  This safe haven provides home to these and numerous other small animals and birds.

Although this sanctuary remains privately owned, the Humane Society Wildlife Land Trust has an obligation to perform periodic inspections to ensure that the wildlife habitat remains in good condition and that the terms of the conservation easements are being met.  These inspections, and the handling of any destruction or violations, cost heavily in professional staff time, consultants, and travel expenses. In addition HSWLT needs a reserve of funds for the substantial legal fees needed if enforcement of violations involves court action.

HSWLT has promised to protect this property as sanctuary forever -- and that promise will be kept.  If you can help with the cost of stewardship for this and the other properties HSWLT protects, please donate here.
