Bats are amazing creatures! Make these decorations for a Halloween party or just create an opportunity to talk about bats with kids.
You'll need:
- Black acrylic paint
- Miniature pumpkins
- Black and white craft foam
- Hole punch
- Glue dots and black duct tape
- Toothpicks and wooden skewers
Instructions
- Paint the pumpkins black and allow them to dry. Real bats have brown or gray fur.
- Make eyes with white craft foam and use the hole punch to make pupils. Glue onto the pumpkin. The old saying goes ‘as blind as a bat’ but in fact, many bats actually have very good vision.
- Make ears and wings from black craft foam (about 6” long). Tape each ear to a toothpick, leaving about 1 ½” of the toothpick exposed, then insert it into the pumpkin. To see inside a cave, bats use “Echolocation,” high frequency sounds similar to radar.
- Tape a skewer to each wing, leaving a 2” point exposed, and push it in place. The world’s smallest bat has a 6" wing span.
