Bats are amazing creatures! Make these decorations for a Halloween party or just create an opportunity to talk about bats with kids.

You'll need:

  • Black acrylic paint
  • Miniature pumpkins
  • Black and white craft foam
  • Hole punch
  • Glue dots and black duct tape
  • Toothpicks and wooden skewers

  1. Paint the pumpkins black and allow them to dry. Real bats have brown or gray fur.
  2. Make eyes with white craft foam and use the hole punch to make pupils. Glue onto the pumpkin. The old saying goes ‘as blind as a bat’ but in fact, many bats actually have very good vision.
  3. Make ears and wings from black craft foam (about 6” long). Tape each ear to a toothpick, leaving about 1 ½” of the toothpick exposed, then insert it into the pumpkin. To see inside a cave, bats use “Echolocation,” high frequency sounds similar to radar.
  4. Tape a skewer to each wing, leaving a 2” point exposed, and push it in place. The world’s smallest bat has a 6" wing span.
